Pirates trade closer Rodriguez to Atlanta; receive INF Chavis from Boston

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a couple significant moves ahead of Friday afternoon's trade deadline.

Pittsburgh dealt reliever Richard Rodriguez to the Atlanta Braves for a pair of right-handers: Ricky DeVito and Bryse Wilson.

Rodriguez recorded a 2.82 ERA for the Bucs this season, and completed 14 of his 17 save opportunities.

The Pirates also traded left-hander Austin Davis to the Boston Red Sox for former Top 100 prospect Michael Chavis.

“Maybe a bit of a fresh start for him, coming out of the organization that drafted him originally,” GM Ben Cherington said of Chavis. “I think initially we'll get him to [Triple-A] Indianapolis, get him settled in there and get him playing, but [I’m] looking forward to reconnecting with him and getting him in a Pirates uniform.”

As for Wilson, who has a 4.83 ERA in seven starts with the Braves this season, Cherington said he expects him to be in Pittsburgh Saturday and ready to play.

“We feel like he can come in and be part of a group of young starting pitchers we're growing and developing and be a strong part of that,” Cherington said, “so look forward to getting to know him.”

Friday's trade of Rodriguez capped off a busy deadline for the Pirates that began last Sunday with the trade of All-Star second baseman Adam Frazier to the San Diego Padres.
