Altoona Salvation Army making changes to operations to mitigate spread of COVID-19

Officials with the Salvation Army in Altoona say they are trying to cut down on the number of people in the building and are limiting access.

Capt. Larry Fulmer says the food pantry will be open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Fulmer says anyone needing food in Blair County should call the office ahead of time and set up an appointment.

Fulmer adds that he is expecting an even greater need than normal.

“People that are working daily or that are trying to survive with working even minimum hours, we want to be there to serve them, as well, if that means just getting them some food to keep going or take something off their plate,” Fulmer said.

Those receiving food must come to the back door and knock.

The Salvation Army has also suspended its soup kitchen and church gatherings and will no longer be offering showers to the homeless.
